DESIGN 118

I love making designs using just foliage, as there is so much beautiful and interesting foliage available in the summer months. This design is made using a large plastic dish with floral foam for the mechanics. In the centre of the design, as a focal point, I have used a wicker ball, and have wound groups of Xerophyllum tenax (Bear Grass) around it at right angles to give more interest. Further loops of Bear grass have also been added to the design. Foliage used on the outer ring, from the top, are Bergenia cordifolia, Hosta (unknown variety), Fatsia japonica variegata, Bergenia cordifolia, Heuchera 'Chocolate Ruffles', Armoracia rusticana variegata (variegated Horseradish), Hosta, and Fatsia japonica variegata. On the inner ring, I have used (starting from the top purple-leaved foliage) Heuchera 'Silver Scrolls', Euonymus fortunei 'Silver Queen', Mentha suaveolens variegata (apple mint), Astilbe, Santolina chamaecyparis, Hakonechloa macra albo-aurea (the yellow grass), more Mentha, Heuchera 'Beauty Colour', Hedera colchica 'Sulphur Heart', more Euonymus and Mentha, and finally, Hosta 'Revolution' (lying just over the Heuchera 'Silver Scrolls'). For a contrast of form and colour, I have added two diagonal groups of two Astelia 'Westland' leaves which spring from the centre of the design.
